Student Council

Student Council has been quite busy. On Wednesday, February 3, 2016, Student Council traveled to St. Bernard’s Parish in Tracy for the Catholic Schools Week mass. Monsignor Ryan delivered a powerful homily that allowed each student to reflect on the gift of our Catholic education. To close out Catholic Schools Week, Student Council hosted a dance for our 6th, 7th, and 8th grade students on Friday, February 5, 2016 in the school cafeteria. The theme of the dance was “Blackout” so all the students came dressed in black and/or other dark colors. Students were given glow in the dark necklaces and bracelets as they entered the dance. The cafeteria was also decorated with glow in the dark decorations. All the students had a great time!

Student Council sponsored “Random Acts of Kindness” Week from February 16-Feburary 26. Student Council made mini awards in the shapes of hearts, happy faces, diamonds and stars with the saying “Caught You Being Kind”, “Kindness Superstar”, “Your Kindness Counts”, and “Thanks For Being Kind”. The awards were attached to pencils. Student Council members were present during recesses, in the hallway, and in the lunchroom looking for students who were portraying kindness. Each teacher was also given a bundle of pencils to “catch students being kind” in the classroom setting. Kylie Lucas, Vivi Quintero, Maritza Mendez, and Emily Silveira (all 5th grade students) were caught being kind by Mrs. Magni for picking up trash and sweeping the cafeteria after lunch. Mrs. Susan Connelly (parent) was caught being kind by Kate Oliveira for assisting with art lessons in the classrooms. Elliot Madrigal (3rd grade) was caught being kind for picking up trash! Joy Frost caught Elijah Perry (7th grade) being kind when he was picking up trash after lunch recess. Bethy Romeo offered a kindness award to Father Ernesto Madrigal who came from Our Lady of Fatima Parish in Modesto to serve our school mass on Friday, February 19.

Student Council is currently preparing to participate in Relay for Life. They are registering under our team name “Sacred Heart Student Council” and are collecting donations/sponsors. The Relay for Life event will be held on April 30, 2016 at Dutcher Middle School. Student Council will proudly participate in honor of AJ Perez and in memory of Mr. John A. Cardoza.

Student Council also hosted the parish Lenten meatless soup supper on Friday, March 4, 2016. The students joined our parish community at the Stations of the Cross and then served meatless soups, bread and beverages to parish members who joined in the community event.

Student Council was also busy going into the K-8 classroom teaching lessons in connection with the CRS Rice Bowls during the season of Lent. Each grade K-8 received at least one lesson and several grades were offered two lessons. As a school Sacred Heart students collected and donated over $1,500 to Catholic Relief Services through Rice Bowl donations!
